Dreams, Myths, and Reality : Utah and the American West
Salt Lake City
In this lecture, Madsen highlights Emmeline B. Wells' personal diplomatic endeavors to unite women despite their differences. A key figure in the woman's movement, Wells sought to unite the women of Utah with national and international associations in support of woman's suffrage. Many woman's groups strongly opposed the practice of polygamy and barred Mormon women from membership. Wells was able to convince them of the strong ally to be found among Mormon women and to look beyond their religious differences to work together for a common goal.
