This article examines Mark deWolfe Howe's views on the separation of church and state. The author reviews in detail Howe's beliefs about the separation of church and state, as first taught by Roger Williams, and how this practice was meant to protect religion from the state. Williams' views on church-state relations are discussed in context of the Mormon Church's 19th-century struggles with the law.
