The law of consecration given to the Saints in Ohio and Missouri served both a spiritual and a temporal purpose. Living the law of consecration manifests a devotion to God, develops unity between the Saints, and provides for the welfare of each participant. Van Dyke traces the historical development of the law of consecration, including the early influence of Parley P. Pratt, Sydney Rigdon, and "the family" organization in Ohio. The revelation giving the full law was received in 1831 and implemented in small communities in Ohio and then Missouri. The Colesville Saints, led by Bishop Partridge, were the first to live the law. Other implementations included the organization of the Literary Firm and the United Firm. Each of these efforts eventually failed through selfishness, internal strife, and external persecutions. In 1838, the law of tithing was revealed as part of the law of consecration. Each of the Saints was required to consecrate their excess property and afterwards tithe ten percent of their annual income to the Church.
