With the organization of the French Mission in 1850, John Taylor began supervising a translation of the Book of Mormon into French, through the efforts of Curtis Bolton. Bolton was assisted by a recent convert, Mr. Wilhelm, and a non-member, Mr. Auge, who spoke no English. Wilhelm soon apostatized and he was replaced by Louis Bertrand. At the time of his baptism, Bertrand was a member of the socialist party in Paris and editor of a Communist newspaper. His editorial skills and his proficiency in English and French greatly assisted with the quality and speed of the translation. This translation has formed the foundation for all subsequent French translations of the Book of Mormon.
