The city of Kirtland was of key significance to early church history. Not only were the majority of the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants given in Kirtland, but it was also the place where Joseph Smith learned some of his most important lessons. Through the trying times in Kirtland, Joseph learned much more about "himself, his friends, . . . and his relationship with Deity." These lessons not only refined Joseph, but they also confirmed Joseph's calling as a prophet of the Lord.
