The circumstances surrounding Joseph F. Smith's vision of the spirit world were discussed. A devastating world war had just concluded. Many religious leaders were making statements filled with political references regarding the war. Others were urging spiritualism. Also, President Smith was deeply affected by the recent deaths of a wife and a daughter. His vision was Christ-centered, confirmed Latter-day Saint belief in a meaningful life-after-death, and gave hope to many people after so much death and destruction.
