"As the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church, grows both within the Unites States and throughout the world, an increasing number of Church members will come into contact with Mormon sacred music as a result of their weekly attendance at worship services. Hymn singing and sacred music have played a significant role in Mormonism since its earliest days, and music currently serves as an important function within Sunday sacrament services as well as in many of the other regular Church meetings. This document examines the current state of Mormon sacred music through providing a brief background ion its historical roots, discussing the current Church music standards set forth by the central leadership of the Church, and examining Church music training programs, both historical and current. It will then compare the staffing and structure, personal skill sets, and training programs of the ideal program with what is actually occurring in four congregations in the United States."
