"The temple is thus organized to develop instructive and edifying relationships between spaces and functions, and to further relationships to scripture and doctrine. The symbolic development is entirely compatible with patterns established in the scriptures, and as employed in the temple ceremonies. The intricate symbolic program of the temple sets it apart from the meetinghouse, just as the temple functions stand in contrast to the simplicity of the usual Sunday meeting schedule. The incorporation of a symbolic and iconographic program into the form and detail of the temple also prefigures to the visitor the symbolic nature of the ceremony taking place within, preparing him for the distinct contrast between the temple ordinances and the events common to everyday life."
