Chapter 1 recounts the meteor shower of November 1833 and describes the Saints' understanding that the shower was a sign of the times. The author then argues that the formation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the Saint's acceptance of Joseph Smith's prophetic call, was based in the romantic notion that the United States is the place where prophecies would be fulfilled. She then suggests that the Book of Mormon could be viewed as a historical romance, a view which allowed early readers to feel a sense of community.
