"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also know as the Mormon Church, is one of the fastest growing religions in the world. According to some scholars, Mormonism stands poised to become the next major world religion. Yet philosophical and theological questions continue to arise that could prevent Mormonism from making the inroads into the larger world culture to become a major world religion. Among these questions is one central question: What should be the relationship between reason and revelation? The lack of a clear and consistent answer to this question continues to influence the development of this religion. From issues of writing Mormon history, to evolution, to new research on the Book of Mormon , the issue of the exact relationship between reason and revelation is the key question facing contemporary Mormons. Drawing upon the work of sociologists and postliberal theologians, this dissertation argues that a more dynamic relationship based upon dialogue with other cultures can be observed to be slowly emerging among theologically informed Mormons that overcomes present tensions within Mormonism in the area of religion and revelation. Such dialogue can be enhanced from not only events in Mormons history, but also from scholars studying this issue outside of Mormonism." [Author's abstract]
