"Instead, this paper will direct attention: (a) to the cooperative relationship between the Latter-day Saints and the secular establishment that started to develop in nineteenth century and that flourished and has endured in the twentieth, and (b) to the adversarial relationship that also prevailed -- often at the same time and in the same places -- between Mormonism and certain non-Mormons. Of greater significance, by analyzing the two communities, as well as looking briefly at the relationship between them, it will also be possible to include here some observations about areas where Mormons and non-Mormons managed to live peaceably together and cooperate for the common good, and areas where Mormons and non-Mormons found themselves caught up in mutual and continuing antagonism."
