"A little over one hundred and fifty years ago, a Mormon scout named Greg Metcalf disappeared after leading a wagon train from Utah to Fort Garland, Colorado. He was last seen loading a few pack mules with supplies as he headed off on the dangerous, bandit-filled trail leading to Fort Laramie. He was 27 years old at the time he disappeared and he left behind a pregnant wife and two young daughters who never learned what became of him. Because Greg was an experienced frontier trailsman who had cheated death countless times before, his family was surprised when he failed to return from what most thought was a routine scouting assignment. Further alarming them was a mysterious note Greg had sent home just days before his disappearance. In it he said, 'It feels like I'm going to my grave.'" [Publisher's abstract]
