"Dress is as far from being a neutral phenomenon for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as is life itself. In their publicly visible clothing, in the unseen sacred undergarment of daily life, in the ritual clothes of temple ceremonies and in the dressing of their dead, Mormons express their involvement in what they call 'the plan of salvation'. To describe Latter-day Saint dress is, inevitably, to engage in at least a double level of analysis where an account of officially explicit Mormon dress codes needs to be complemented by appropriate social scientific analysis. Here we will furnish an account both of what Latter-day Saints wear, and of their own reasons for adopting their clothing, before moving from this descriptive to a more interpretative level of analysis."
