"The sacred dress in both groups restrain one's behavior in the social world to some extent, albeit in different ways. At the same time it mediates the character of interaction that occurs with that world. Certainly individuals in both groups care what non-members think and for both groups, one reason for maintaining the standards of the group regarding their dress is to serve as an example to the world. Thus, however different the Amish and Mormons may be regarding their social and ideological agenda, their sacred dress serves to preserve their worldviews at the same time as it mediates being both in and of the public world."
