This essay discusses the experiences of Jane Manning James (1822-1908), an early member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Jerri Harwell, a woman who brings Jane to life through a one-woman play about Jane. Mueller provides insights into the life of a black woman living in 19th-century Utah, as well as insights into the experiences of black members of the LDS Church in the 21st century.
