"In former dispensations, sacred temples had at least two major functions. First, they were regarded as places of contact between heaven and earth, or of communication between God and man (see, for example, Exodus 25:8, 22). Second, these sacred structures were also places for performing holy priesthood ordinances (see D&C 124:38). Both of these significant functions would need to be a part of the 'restitution of all things' (Acts 3:21) when the Lord would 'gather together in one all things' during 'the dispensation of the fulness of times' (Ephesians 1:10). Joseph Smith would be intimately involved in this restoration of temple service, and it would constitute a major contribution of his ministry." [From author's introduction]
