"Freedom in America did not spring forth fully formed in a vacuum. Rather, the groundwork for the establishment of political and religious freedom in the United States resulted from hundreds of years of development in Europe. Religious reformers broke the exclusive hold of the Catholic Church on Europe and prepared the way for religious pluralism. The growth of pluralism laid the foundation for the later development of religious freedom." [From author's conclusion]
