"Vilate's life story is entwined with the history of the church she and her husband Heber embraced. She sent him off on eight missions all tolled and their sons as well. The opening passage of this her biography tells it all. The Christian gospel they embraced assured them life after mortality and she depended on that--planned on spending eternity with Heber. In the mean time she kept him in touch with what was going on in their world through her letters, and he with her as well. On one such occasion she suffered with illness as she sent Heber on yet another mission leaving her and a five-year-old to fetch water for her and keep her and the other children fed. She was again alone as she witnessed the return of the body of their beloved prophet Joseph Smith who had been murdered while incarcerated in a Carthage, Illinois jail. Even as Heber left their beautiful Nauvoo to travel west and set up yet another home this time in the valley of the Great Salt Lake he did so alone. Finally he returned to gather his family together he and Vilate never to be separated again." [Author's abstract]
