In this article Jensen outlines some of the key elements involved with understanding the record-keeping practices of the early Church. He focuses on three record-keeping mysteries--possible bookkeeping notations, alphabetic arrangement, and the topical classification of Old Testament terms--and outlines the historian's path to discovering their purpose. He urges historians to focus, not only on a record's content, but on the way it was created to find clues to both the document and early Mormon thought.
