Smith discusses the beginings and practice of plural (or celestial) marriage in Nauvoo, Illinois. He discusses Joseph Smith's method of teaching this doctrine to men in the church, as well as to future plural wives. He also discusses the secrecy with which it was treated, the ways it was received, and controversy on the subject. He also reports and analyzes the incidence of plural marriage in Nauvoo and its growth as the saints moved west.
