In her "Introduction," Anderson discusses the messages in and purposes behind the articles by Bolton and Bergera. She discusses how a close look at the nine principles of church history presented by the Community of Christ can be used as a starting point in inter-religious dialogue between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and the Community of Christ on the subject of their early, shared history. In "History in the Community of Christ: A Personal View," Bolton discusses the increase of freedom to write Community of Christ history in the last 50 years without fearing pressure from church leaders if it does not portray the church nicely. He then lists the nine "Church History Princliples," and discusses how each have helped lead to this increase in honest history. In "LDS History Principles: Public Theory, Private Practice," Bergera addresses two main issues in the world of LDS History: (1) The official position of the LDS Church on writing scholarly Church history, including the kinds of history it supports; and (2) the practical issues of writing and publishing scholarly LDS Church history.
