The Mormon Church is examined in order to see how "an older, marginal group" gained public acceptance and respectability in the larger society. Doctrinal changes and public relations efforts of the Church are discussed. Certain parallels are pointed out between the Mormon Church and the Moonies. The authors conclude that the Mormons drive for legitimation has been highly successful in presenting "the image of a Christian church" but being "far from Christian in its theology under even the most generous conditions of evaluation."
