The establishment and rise of Mormonism is characterized as an "ancient ideal restored" which reflects modern sentiments. He says that "Mormon doctrine was not accepted as it was first proposed, but underwent changes in response to the opposition it encountered which made it acceptable at the same time that it gained recognition."
