This article chronicles the life of Mormon pioneer Howard Egan, specifically his association with the Pony Express. Egan served as body guard to Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, captain of pioneer companies, a major in the Nauvoo Legion, and a cattle driver. In his many crosscountry travels, Egan was a trail blazer scouting out the Overland Trail used by the Pony Express. Egan was also one of the oldest Pony Express riders, and the first to carry eastbound mail.
