In 1839 Samuel Bogart wrote a letter to the postmaster in Quincy, Illinois, in an effort to discredit the Mormons, locate the Mormon Crooked River participants, and recover some of his company's horses which he said had been stolen by Mormons. The article concludes with some other unfavorable descriptions of Bogart's character. The full text of the letter is included in the article.
