Scott Esplin tells the story of the redevelopment of Nauvoo in the twentieth century, an effort of both the RLDS and LDS organizations. Later, the LDS Church concentrated on purchasing the Nauvoo Temple property, a process that took twenty-five years. There were for many years rumors of a Nauvoo Temple memorial, or a reconstructed temple. Elder Bryant Hinckley, father of President Gordon B. Hinckley, was a firm supporter of this idea. There was tension between the two churches about that particular area in Nauvoo. In the 1960's, physician J. LeRoy Kimball purchased several historic homes in Nauvoo. In 1962 Nauvoo Restoration, Inc., was created. The original focus was on historical restoration, but after 1970 the focus became missionary work. The Nauvoo Illinois Temple was built and dedicated in June 2002.
