Reid Neilson gives a brief overview of missionary work in China. Missionaries were sent to Hong Kong about 1852, but soon left due to political unrest and difficulties with the climate. The first Chinese converted to the Church were in Hawaii in 1854. In the 19th century, despite many Asian immigrants to Utah, little effort was made to do missionary work among them. The next outward reach of the Church to Asians occurred in 1901, when Apostle Heber J. Grant was sent to open the Japan Mission. He dedicated that country the same year. After World War I, Church President Heber J. Grant sent Apostle David O. McKay on a fact-finding trip around the world. It was on this trip in Peking (Beijing), China, that he dedicated that country on February 9, 1921. The text of the dedicatory prayer is included in this article. The rest of this article is a brief history of the Church in Asia from 1921 to the present. At the close, membership statistics for Hong Kong and Taiwan are included.
