Brian C. Hales presents the story of the conflict between Emma Smith and Eliza R. Snow, then examines the root stories of that conflict. There are six sources about that conflict, and Hales finds problems with each narrative. All of the sources are at least second hand. There are chronological inconsistencies, and inconsistencies with the stories describing a flight of stairs. Hales also questions the relationship between Joseph Smith and Eliza R. Snow. Hales concludes that "folklore predominates where historical evidence is unavailable."
