In this article, Paul Y. Hoskisson points out that each element of the Word of Wisdom could also be found in health literature during the 1830s, but that the Word of Wisdom was still unique in concept. Hoskisson goes on to review some of the literature about the history of the Word of Wisdom, and then, item by item (alcohol, tobacco, etc.), discusses some of the historical points about these substances in the 19th century. He also discusses beliefs about health in that century which were not placed in the Word of Wisdom. Hoskisson concludes that "the Word of Wisdom ... contain(s) appropriate, enduring, and correct precepts that have withstood the test of time."
