Esplin describes the events surrounding the Saints' move from Kirtland, Ohio, to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1837, pointing out that these were particularly difficult times for Joseph Smith. There were dissenters in the Church and persecution from outside the Church. However, Esplin states that this was a time of growth for the Church, for missionary work, and for Joseph Smith himself.
