Seth Bryant contrasts the Morrisites and their Church in an effort to explain the charismatic authority of a prophet and the institutional authority of an organization. Joseph Morris, founder of the Morrisites, was a charismatic prophet at a time when the LDS Church was becoming an institutional authority. Those who joined the Morrisites were disillusioned with such authority. Also during the time known as the reformation, the practice of polygamy was emphasized among the members, and Joseph Morris did not believe in it. He went on to found the Morrisites on April 6, 1861, and believed that the Second Coming was to follow shortly after this event. He and several of his followers were killed in a battle with militia.
