Oman applies a legal method of interpretation to the institutions and practices of Mormonism to articulate the logic of those institutions and practices. He discusses Church courts in the 19th century as examples. He concludes that "the turn to legal interpretation helps to render articulate what was previously mute and reveals Mormon practices and institutions ... as worthy of the interest of an intelligent person.
