In 1847 members of the Mormon Battalion, on the way to meet their families in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake, passed through the Carson Valley- one of the most fertile and productive regions in the western part of the United States. They were impressed with what they saw there and reported to Church authorities that this beautiful valley was well watered by the Carson River (which flowed through its entire length) and by innumerable mountain streams. Favorable recommendations from former Battalion members and others undoubtedly aroused interest in this vicinity as a site for future settlement.
