Before his death in 1844, the Prophet Joseph Smith had referred to the valleys of the mountains and the Great Salt Lake Basin as one of the places of refuge and security for the Saints. Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had also considered possible settlement in California and Oregon. On February 29, 1844, Joseph Smith requested that the Quorum of the Twelve send a delegation to California and Oregon to find a favorable place for the Saints to migrate after the completion of the Nauvoo Temple. Although a group of five was called to this assignment, it was not fulfilled because of the Prophet's tragic death four months later.
