Between 1825 and 1830, a group of Hudson's Bay Company trappers led by Peter Skene Ogden explored the Humboldt Rivery Valley region. In 1833 mountain man Joseph Walker, while in the employ of Captain Bejamin L. E. de Bonneville, led a band of trappers on what was supposedly an exploring trip to California. They traversed the entire length of the Humboldt to its sink (near present-day Lovelock, Nevada), then ventured south to Walker Lake and across the great Sierras).
