Embry and Brambaugh researched periodicals, journals, oral histories, mission histories, and local newspapers to answer four questions: (1) Did mission presidents receive instructions to form basketball teams from Church headquarters, (2) Did the Missionary Committee assign athletes to particular missions because of sports skills, (3) Did the idea spread because mission presidents shared their success with other mission presidents (4) How successful were these mission sports programs. The authors go on to give details in the missionary sports program in several countries in Europe, the Pacific, and Latin America. Also included is a section on future general authority Carlos E. Asay, and his mission in Palestine-Syria, where he played and coached basketball throughout the Middle East. After the 1960's and the changes in the MIA programs, sports were dropped in favor of more spiritual conversion methods. Also, the 'baseball baptism' scandals in England and Europe discouraged such activity.
