Robert McPherson discusses the contention between William T. Shelton, Indian agency superintendent, and Ba'alilee, an influential Navajo medicine man, in Aneth, Utah. Ultimately, Shelton called in the U.S. Cavalry to enforce his wishes, and a short battle was fought. McPherson feels that the conflict was "between the two classes, the progressive and the unprogressive" and for the latter "something more than kind talk and persuasion would have to be used."
