Hunt gives a brief history of the religious pilgrimages made to Jerusalem every year by people of all faiths. He notes that, during the time of the Ottoman Empire, these pilgrimages decreased in number significantly. Orson Hyde was one of the few that made pilgrimages during this time. Hunt explains that Hyde was given the mission to dedicate the land for the return of the Jews.
