Barnes gives a brief history of Frederick Madison Smith, the third president of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a man deeply interested in the relationship between science and religion, Smith often experimented with peyote, a hallucinogenic drug thought to have religious significance. Smith admitted to liberal use of the drug in his "search for what he would identify as the 'higher powers of man.'"
