Hartley explores the importance letter-writing played as a primary mode of communication for early LDS leaders and members. He explains the basic practices of the U.S. Postal Service, as well as the mechanics of letter-writing and posting letters during the 1831-33 time periods. Hartley explores the "communication crises" that occurred during the 1833 expulsion of the Mormons from Jackson County.
