In this study of the Oratorio Society and of the pioneer musical heritage of which it is the inheritor, Mr. Smith has detailed the development of Salt Lake City music. In five introductory chapters he identifies the major organizations, personalities, and social and cultural trends that shaped Salt Lake City's widely heralded interest in music and that eventually made founding of the Oratorio Society a virtual inevitability - its annual Tabernacle performances of Handel's Messiah as indispensable part of the city's cultural life.... In addition, a three part appendix includes all members of the Society's Board of Directors; chorus officers and officials; charter members of the Society; a detailed chronology of all Society performances; and the names of more than six thousand chorus members who have sung with the Society in the nearly three-quarters of a century it has existed.
