This article gives a brief history of education during the settlement of Utah. The author begins by describing the first public school, which was established three months after the arrival of the first group of pioneers. The author then notes the increase in public schooling and the effect schools taught by people of other faiths had on the Saints. The author concludes by describing the eventual shift in children attending Church schools to public schools.
