The author presents the development of the doctrine of eternal progression in the Church from the late 1890's to the present. He presents two arguments--first, that sometimes Mormon writers of this time misrepresented the doctrine of other Churches to exalt LDS doctrine, and second, that though the idea of an afterlife was not unique to the LDS Church, the concept in Mormonism was different. The author concludes that "the doctrine continues to take on meaning suitable to its proprietors."
