By the turn of the 20th century, Salt Lake City's three religious based hospitals (Holy Cross, St. Marks, and LDS) began training programs for nursing students. These programs were advantageous to both the students and the hospitals because "While students worked closely with trained nurses, the students provided essential inexpensive staffing services for the hospitals." By the 1970's all of these programs had ended as University nursing programs began to replace hospital training programs as the preferred method of nursing education. The influence of these programs and their graduates, however, continues today through the work of those graduates and subsequent nurses they have helped train.
