David H. Morris, a St. George Utah resident, privately collected affidavits about the Mountain Meadows Massacre until his death in 1937. His foster daughter, Helen Forsha Hafen, then turned these documents over to Church Headquarters. Juanita Brooks desperately wanted to use these materials for a book she was publishing, and was told which affidavits were included, but was not allowed to take them for study. These affidavits in some cases include testimony that is included elsewhere, but are nonetheless valuable.
