Kimball outlines the possible historical origins of the ban on Blacks holding the Priesthood. He then discusses how Church leaders began to examine the origins of the ban the 20th century. The spread of missionary work into areas where many individuals had mixed race ancestry (such as Cuba and Brazil), as well as increasing interest in the Church by Black Africans, the civil rights movement, and a growing understanding that the ban had no clear revelatory origins seems to have led Church leadership, especially President Kimball, to actively seek revelation on whether to remove the ban. The desired revelation was finally obtained by Spencer W. Kimball and the Twelve in June of 1978, and caused great rejoicing among church members everywhere.
