Brigham Young wanted to demonstrate the ease and efficiency of handcart migration in the aftermath of the Willie and Martin Company tragedies, In 1857 he called around 70 missionaries to travel partway to their missions in the Eastern States using handcarts as transportation. The carts started from Salt Lake City on April 23 1857 and ended in Florence, Nebraska safely on June 11 1857. This is the only instance of handcart travel from West to East.
