Carmack traces the history and growth of the Church in various regions of California. Initially any gathering place other than Utah was discouraged, but over time as members migrated from Utah, or were converted in California, it became a major center of the Church. The Church in California has been able to succeed in California's increasingly diverse population, and Carmack believes this success provided an example and model for the rapidly internationalizing Church to follow.
