Russell traces the history of the RLDS church under the descendants of Joseph Smith. During the mid-1900s, RLDS theology began its shift from a Restoration centered theology, and this shift was accelerated under Wallace B. Smith, the last Smith president of the RLDS church. Some of the other radical changes that occurred under his presidency were the acknowledgement that Joseph Smith may have practiced polygamy, the ordination of women to the priesthood, the new emphasis on peace, the allowing of open communion to all Christians, the discarding of the concept of lineal succession, and the change in the church's name to The Community of Christ.
