Fluhman discusses how the early American comparison of Joseph Smith to Mohammed was not merely based on both individuals' prophetic claim and authorship of new scriptures. It also followed a previously established pattern of comparing "Orthodox" Christian religion with what Protestants saw as dangerous religious imposters. Joseph Smith was only the latest in a long line of religious leaders (from the Pope to Mother Ann Lee) to be compared unflatteringly with the Muslim prophet, antebellum America's historical "arch-imposter."
